A Church Without Walls

Lionel Swanson

What is your title? Business Administrator

What do you do? As a longtime member of Grace UMC, Lionel considers it an honor to serve the Lord as Business Administrator after a 30 year career with Allied Signal Aerospace ending as a Director of Finance for over 2000 engineers. He can be found in the church office, ready and available to help and serve anyone with any question, problem, or need that they may have. Keeping the financial records and all related detail and working with all areas of the church, Lionel considers this as his ministry to the congregation.

Where are you from? My wife Jane and I are both from Stromsburg, Nebraska, but have lived in Arizona since 1972. After college and Lionel’s time in the military, including a tour in Viet Nam, we set out to find our place in life rather than taking over the life of a dairy farmer from his Dad.

Who is in your family? Jane and I have 2 children, Tim and Melissa, who are both married and living in the Valley of the Sun. They each have 1 son, so Grandma and Grandpa enjoy having the 2 grandsons close so we can spoil them as grandparents should. In addition, we both consider Grace UMC to be a special part of our family.

Any Bible verses or hymns that are particularly meaningful to you? The first thing that comes to mind is Matthew 25:40. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me”. My passion has been missions outreach, and Jane and I have been fortunate to serve our local community and the organizations that Grace supports as well as nationally in leading work teams following Hurricane Katrina and the tornadoes in Oklahoma City, as well as being part of a work / study team to the Holy land.
